Honoring Women in the Episcopal Church

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate women’s achievements and inspire continued progress. The Episcopal Church stands as a beacon of this progress, demonstrating the vital role women play in ministry.

Though rooted in tradition, the Episcopal Church has been a leader in recognizing women’s spiritual leadership. Despite past barriers, women have profoundly shaped its history.

The courageous “Philadelphia Eleven” in 1974 challenged the status quo, leading to the official ordination of women in 1976. Since then, women have risen to serve as priests, bishops, and rectors, culminating in Katharine Jefferts Schori’s historic election as Presiding Bishop in 2006.

Today, women are central to the church’s ministries, driving community service, social justice, and spiritual guidance. Their diverse perspectives enrich the church, fostering inclusive environments.

This Women’s History Month, we honor the trailblazers of the Episcopal Church. Their legacy reminds us that “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28). Let their courage inspire us to champion the invaluable contributions of women, within the church and in all areas of life.
